Hello Rivers Edge PTA members.
We are off to a great start to the school year! The first General Membership Meeting of 2017-2018 comes upon us Thursday September 14th, 2017 at 6:30pm. You will find the 2017-2018 proposed Rivers Edge Elementary School PTA budget for your review by clicking the link below. Please join us at the General Membership Meeting as we put this budget to a vote so we can get on with the business of the PTA and give our kids an amazing year to cherish!
Thank you to the executive board members who have been working on this over the summer. A special ‘thanks’ to Katie Caples who spent countless hours recording, organizing and verifying info and details in order to present this finished document.
The Box Tops for Education program has given away over $800 million to schools across America. Rivers Edge has earned more than $22,000 since 2004 from the Box Tops for Education program. Last year alone we raised $2,000. The money raised goes directly back to the students through teacher stipends and enrichment programs.
Box Tops for Education (BTFE) offers many easy ways to help our school earn money:
1. Clip: Box tops coupons from hundreds of participating products and send them to school. Box tops are worth 10 cents each when we redeem them.
2. Join Box Tops online now: — it’s easy and free!
- Bonus Box Tops offers monthly promotions and sweepstakes where you can enter for a chance to win thousands of Bonus Box Tops for our school.
- Coupons which can be downloaded on Box Tops eligible products
- Box Tops Bonus App: Free app found in either the App Store or Google Play, which gives Rivers Edge extra Box Tops when receipts are submitted.
- Participants must have a Box Tops account linked to Rivers Edge
- Check the app for bonus opportunities
- Scan receipt
- Rivers Edge account is automatically credited
** If you do not wish to download the app, but would still like to participate, send in your receipt with your child’s teacher’s name on it OR send a picture to email@example.com and it will be done for you and credited toward your child’s class.
Box Tops are found on many common products such as:
- General Mills cereals (e.g. Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Chex)
- Ziploc products
- Hefty products (e.g. cups, garbage bags)
- Green Giant vegetables
- Progresso soups
- Yoplait yogurt
- Land O’Lakes butter
- Motts applesauce
- Nature Valley granola bars
- Annie’s Organic products
- Fiber One
- Old El Paso products
- Lysol products
- Boise Paper
- Many others (check the BTFE website for a full list)
We will have several collecting contests throughout the year – the class with the most collected per student will win a special prize. Our goal this year is to raise $2,000.
Thanks and happy clipping!

We are so excited to welcome back everyone to Rivers Edge for the 2017-2018 school year! It is especially exciting to be anticipating a whole new group of faces who will be walking the halls, coming to our events and joining the REES family. Our community thrives on a spirit of inclusion, support and genuine friendships.

(Rain date is already set for Tuesday August 29th from 6-8pm). We will have light snacks, along with current parents and students, PTA members and a surprise guest that your children will not want to miss!
On behalf of the whole PTA and Rivers Edge community I want to welcome you and say I truly look forward to making sure you feel welcome as we kick off this new school year!
Michael J. Soekawa
2017-2018 REES PTA President
All summer long (but especially from July 17th-August 17th) Papa John’s and Rivers Edge Elementary School are partnering once again for a fun and easy spirit promotion.
Use our special promo code: REESPTA in the promo box at www.papajohns.com or when you call in or when you order in person and help your Rivers Edge PTA raise funds to put towards our kids throughout the year.
We have posted a flyer below with all the details. So while you are eating some delicious pizza tonight you will also be helping your PTA with additional funds to continue all the activities and purchases at Rivers Edge which give our children such an incredible elementary school experience! We thank you! The kids all thank you! You can see it in their smiles all year long…
My name is Mary Han and it has been a privilege and honor to serve as the PTA president for the 2015-17 school years. In the short time my family has attended Rivers Edge Elementary, we have felt so welcome.
My daughter Jamie is now a rising 6th grader and my son Ethan is a rising 4th grader. Although I’ll be sharing my time between two schools, I am still excited to be a Rivers Edge parent for another two years!
One of my last events as outgoing president was to meet with the newest Eagles and their families at kindergarten preview in April and present an overview of our PTA. I loved seeing those eager little faces and was excited to welcome them to them into the Rivers Edge community.
We have an amazing PTA here at Rivers Edge with amazing volunteers! A big thanks to all of our volunteers. Without you, we would not be able to have the many programs and activities that we do. Our PTA also has incredible support from the faculty and staff at REES. All the time, service and hard work, from our volunteers, teachers, and REES staff are invaluable to our children and, after all, they are the main reason the PTA exists — the overall purpose of PTA is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
There are several committee chair and co-chair positions still open for next year. If you have any questions about volunteer opportunities or want to know how to get more involved, please contact our VP Volunteers, Kim Poulton, at email@example.com. As we bring the school year to a close and celebrate our successes, we thank our outgoing board members for their service to Rivers Edge and welcome our newest officers.
The members of the 2017-18 REES PTA Executive Board are:
- Michael Soekawa, President
- Brittany Rose, VP Ways and Means
- Kim Poulton, VP Volunteers
- Heather Jarvis, VP Programs
- Katie Caples, Treasurer
- Eva Cauble, Secretary
The 2017-18 REES PTA Executive Board is busy planning and preparing for the 2017-18 school year. Working together with Mrs. James and the rest of the REES staff, the students of REES will continue to have healthy minds, bodies, and spirit in the 2017-18 school year. Looking forward to seeing all new and returning students and their families in September — but in the meantime, have a safe, fun and relaxing summer!
Please note that there is a correction to the Executive Board Member Interest form that was sent home on Friday March 3, 2017 in your child’s blue communication folder. The Executive Board position of Treasurer should have been included on the form. The revised form can be found at the link below. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Should you have any questions regarding any of the Board Positions, please do not hesitate to contact Kim Poulton at firstname.lastname@example.org or directly at 804-307-3859.
Happy New Year! Welcome back, REES Eagles! I hope you had a fun and relaxing winter break and that you are refreshed and ready to continue building your “Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit” at Rivers Edge!
Thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who helped make the REES PTA programs a success in 2016. In 2017, we are excited to continue hosting fun-filled programs for our students and families.
PTA Nominating Committee
Believe it or not, it’s already time to establish a PTA Nominating Committee for next year’s Executive Board. If you are looking for a quick way to help the PTA, then this is the committee for you! The job of this committee is to put together a slate of candidates to fill the Executive Board positions for the 2017-2018 school year. If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee, please contact Kim Poulton at email@example.com.

As we get ready for Thanksgiving, I’d like to say thank you on behalf of REES PTA to Tami, Pegg, Jessica Lewis, Suja Amir, Katie Caples, Eva Cauble, Teri Curry, Emily Pierce, Megha Nayak, Andi DeVelin, and Kim Poulton for all their help in making the Fall Festival a success this year. Even with moving the event inside, we all had so much fun!
You may not know this, but with all the programs, events, and little extras the PTA provides for the students, teachers, and staff—there are many volunteers behind the scenes helping us along the way. Many times they are not out in front getting the accolades, but I wanted to say thank you to all the PTA volunteers who spend many hours making copies, helping in the front office, lunch room and classrooms, running Box Tops contests, Hospitality, Magic Mailbox, Birthday Board, Yearbook, attending evening meetings across town, our student directory, e-newsletter and website. THANK YOU! Without your help, our PTA would just not run smoothly.
The Eagle Fund
We are just over $12,000 toward our $16,000 goal. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far! Last year we added the Apex Fun Run to offset a shortfall of donations to our Eagle Fund, but we did NOT schedule it for this year. It is critical that we raise the remaining $3,600 that we budgeted for in order to continue to provide all the events, programs, technology and school improvements necessary for our school. Please consider donating to our Eagle Fund. Donations can be made online via PayPal or by downloading this form.
We are currently 39 people shy of reaching our 100% membership goal. Please, if you have not already joined the PTA you can download your membership form here.
REES PTA Meeting and 5th Grade Performance
Please come out to our next PTA General Membership Meeting on Dec. 8th at 6:30 p.m. for our 5th Graders’ Performance.
Save the Date
Don’t forget to save the date for REES Around the World/Silent Auction Feb, 9, 2017! We have some really exciting auction items already!
Spirit Wear is for sale! We have added adult sizes in both hooded and crew sweatshirts and still have children’s sizes available too! Like us on Facebook to get the latest on the dates we will be selling before school hours or contact Andi DeVelin at firstname.lastname@example.org if you need to purchase.
REES PTA Nominating Committee
Flyers will go home the first week of December seeking members to serve on the 2016-2017 Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee will select a slate of officers for the 2017-2018 REES PTA Executive Committee. Please consider serving on the Nominating Committee. Serving as a leader on the REES PTA is a very rewarding way to volunteer and be involved at your child’s school.
Many thanks again for all your support of REES PTA, and I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends, and safe travels to those venturing out of town for the Thanksgiving break. See you at our next Spirit Night at Cheeburger Cheeburger on Dec. 12th!
The Fall Festival will be held inside the school in case of rain from 5-7 pm Friday, Oct. 21.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 a ticket (up to a maximum of $40).
Only children who are in kindergarden through 5th grade require a ticket to be purchased. Siblings/friends that are younger and/or older may participate but are not required to purchase a ticket.
Gold/Silver Eagle Fund Members are eligible for free admission to the Fall Festival even if you did not submit a form. We will have a list available with everyone who has purchased tickets or if you are unsure of whether you purchased or are eligible for tickets.
Upon arriving at the Fall Festival you will need to first check in and receive your wrist bands and gift bag.
Tickets/wrist bands will be distributed at the check-in table during the Fall Festival only.
As we transition into fall, I hope our REES Eagles have also fully transitioned into their 2016-17 school routine and are now walking through the halls of REES with a “Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit.” Thank you to Todd Hansen for another successful International Walk to School Day with 385 — 62% —families participating!
Calling all parents: Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out this year! We are off to a great start in so many ways, unfortunately, we still have some significant needs for volunteers. Due to lack of a Reflections Chair, we have cancelled our Reflections program this year. We are still in need of a REES Around the World Chair, and a VP of Programs on our PTA Board. Please consider volunteering for either of these positions so we don’t have to cancel any more events/programs.
Membership: Thank you to the 618 members who have already joined the Rivers Edge PTA! 92% of our parents have joined (43% are male!) and we are so close to our 100% membership goal, but not quite there yet. If you have not joined, it is not too late! This is an easy, low cost way to support our school, students and staff, and we would love to make this our largest membership year ever at Rivers Edge!
Eagle Fund: Our annual fundraising campaign is well under way. THANK YOU to our families who’ve contributed $14,000 toward our $16,000 goal. Keep those donations coming and ask your employer about our corporate matching program. Thank you for your generosity!
Fall Festival: Don’t forget to purchase your Fall Festival tickets — Oct. 12th is the last day to purchase them at the discounted rate of $8/ticket before they increase to $15/ticket. All pre-purchase tickets (including Silver and Gold Eagle Fund donors) will be at the check-in table the day of the Festival. ***This is a change from past years.
Spirit Wear: For those of you who ordered REES Spirit Wear, we should receive those orders next week. For those of you who weren’t able to order this time, we ordered a few extra! More to come on when we will sell the extras…
Spirit Night: Our next Spirit Night is Oct. 10th at Potbelly’s at Cox and Broad from 5-9pm. We look forward to seeing you there!
Thank you to everyone for coming out tonight and approving our 2016-2017 budget at our first PTA General Membership Meeting tonight. In case you missed our brief presentation at Back to School Night, here are a few highlights:
We will continue to communicate with you via e-Newsletters sent out regularly that have shorter articles directing you to our updated website for more information. We will also continue using social media! Please like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
We passed our 2015-16 audit! No changes are required. We voted to approve the audit and the 2016-17 budget.
Thank you to the 200 families who have donated to the Eagle Fund for more than $12,500! We are almost to our $16,000 Direct Donation Goal!! You can still donate on our website or send in your donation with your form.
We currently have 574 PTA members. That puts us at 85% membership! We’re almost to our 100% goal, so please if you have not joined the PTA, consider joining now, and remember that more than one family member can join from each household, as well as family members who do not reside with you. You should receive your cards next week.
We voted to approve the changes to our by-laws. You can view them here.
We need your help!! We are still short volunteers and desperately need help with Hospitality, Silent Auction, VP of Programs and Reflections. If you don’t want to see these events go away, please consider volunteering with the PTA. Contact Kim Poulton at email@example.com for more information.
